Mediana at a glance
Mediana is the site of a Late Roman imperial residence. The National Museum Niš links it to Constantine the Great and his sons. The museum places the site about 5 km from Niš. That distance is measured from Niš, not from Niška Banja, so Mediana is a trip across town and not a walk from the spa.
This is an independent guide. Hours and prices come from the museum's published information and are a guide for 2026. Check the current state before you go.

Mediana: the history in brief
According to the museum, the complex was built in several phases, from the late 3rd or early 4th century to the middle of the 5th century. It was used most intensively between 330 and 361. The museum gives 441 to 443 as the time of its destruction in the Hun invasion.
The site is not a single building but several parts of a residential complex. It helps to read a little about the history before you arrive.
The name of the site is not the same as the city municipality of Medijana. If you search on a map, look for the archaeological site and not just the municipality.

What you see at Mediana
You see stone foundations of the buildings, and the mosaic floors are covered by a protective roof. Ask at the entrance which areas are open on the day, because this can differ from one day to the next.
Wear sturdy shoes: this is an archaeological site and not a landscaped park. For a winter visit, check the current state before you go.

Combining Mediana with Niš and Niška Banja
One way to order a day.
Morning: Mediana
Mediana closes at 4 p.m. on weekdays, earlier than the Skull Tower. Put it first.
Afternoon: Ćele Kula and the fortress
The Skull Tower is open until 7 p.m. on weekdays. That leaves time for a walk to the fortress on the Nišava afterwards.
Skull Tower →Evening: back to the spa
Niška Banja is about 10 km from Niš. The city timetable lists line 1 to Niška Banja. Check the last departures before you go, and keep a taxi as a fallback.
